I recently had the privilege of having my photograph taken by Supermodel turned photographer, Catalina Emanuela Magee. I had no clear idea of what type of photographs she usually takes, so I went with an open mind and hoped for the best. I soon realized she’s not any type of photographer I am used to having my picture taken by! She’s a high fashion caliber photographer, which I have never had the pleasure of being involved with before. She’s been a reader of my writing for a while and already had ideas for me. Here’s just a sampling of the photographs, I hope you enjoy them!
Please feel free to let me know which one or style of photo you like the best. In my opinion these are beyond any words I can come up for them and I am having great difficulty picking any particular one!

These are just a few pictures Catalina has sent me so far. What I did want was a picture of me reaching out to the camera, sort of reaching out with mental Super Focus – you’ll notice that effort in one of the above photos, she took quite a few of those, so I am looking forward to see what else she came up with. Let me know what you think! She’s offered to take more photos in a studio (these were all outdoors), therefore your feedback will give us some ideas! ~Bryan

I think the last photo – the tight closeup of your face – is the most powerful, although it seems to be printed without sufficient contrast (perhaps to be arty?).
Enjoy…
I think that would of been a blast she is a beutiful girl. I love the one for your face shot . the one with the jacket up . and the I don’t care about nothing look the one in the blue shirt. I really liked that one it just looks really natural and fun. well you have a good day. that is my thoughts anyway . She can come over and do me next it looks like fun.
Bryan,
You asked me for my honest opinion/reaction to these pictures and I’m going to give it. Doing so puts me in an odd place, though, because you clearly like these or you wouldn’t have posted them, and my reactions to them are mixed.
You can’t explain a photo with sub-text, it has to explain itself and stand on its own.
Also – bear in mind the print will look different than the image presented on the screen. And if your monitor hasn’t been calibrated, than our visual experience of the same image will differ – possibly substantially.
I look from the top down, but work from the bottom-up.
Each picture conveys a different feeling to me. The three I like most are #2, 3, and 5.
In the last one (5), you appear most approachable. The one above it, with you reaching out to the camera, could be considered threatening (maybe you don’t watch enough Law & Order) – but by putting your hands between you and the camera, you’re distancing yourself from the viewer.
I like the one above that (3) of you in the red sweater, however it emphasizes the difference between your eyes – only one peaked eyebrow might be considered a sneer.
In #2, in the gray coat – it’s what I’d use as an author’s photo. It’s serious and semi-formal – but I’d like it better against a flattering background. You look like the image has been lifted from Photoshop.
For the first one, at the top: My first impression is that you’re too old for it and it’s not your socio-economic culture. It’s almost a ‘homeboy’ pose, and distances you.
Bryan I love the love the last photo. The only thing
I would ask her if she could darken the photo some, it looks over exposed. If she could do that I would chose that photo. It just shows a great image that I think you are trying to obtain.
Good luck,
Mindy
I vote for the second one where you’re wearing the black jacket with collar up. Very dramatic, mysterious, successful author-y, artistic.
On the other hand, if you want to look more friendly, the last one with the close up of your face might do that.
I’m offering my 2 cents worth without reading the other comments, I don’t want to be biased. Here goes.
#1 is a handsome portrait. We don’t know the purpose or destination of the photo. If you’re thinking of using it on a book cover, I’d lighten it a tad so that there is more definition, facial contours etc. and less of the “Matrix” feel.
#2 Again, the purpose of the photo makes a big difference. I wouldn’t put this on a book jacket, the raised eyebrow implies (at least to me) that you have questions or doubts, which you may, we all do, but that weakens your authority as the author of your material. It’s a great photo, but one I’d scrapbook in my memoirs.
#3 The David Copperfield look is not working.
#4 Has much sincerity, give the impression of depth of character and someone I’d like to know. The photo has the power to engender respect without a single word in print.
From a visual point of view, again thinking of an author’s spot on a book jacket, I’d like to see a tad more of your face, and, the opposite of #1, #4 would be nice with a a slightly darker value but without loosing the softness that implies so much in the photo.
Thanks for asking.
Correction to above review: I didn’t realize that the open-armed photo at the top was part of the “gallery” being reviewed, so my numbers reference only the 1-4 below your text Bryan. The top photo says to me, “well, here they are, take a look” and I didn’t take it seriously as something you’d be considering publishing. Sorry if that sounded too blunt, but I think you want to know what we’re really thinking, right?
Nice blue shirt though.
Kathy
Bryan, the first to me says,” I am free to be me.” The second photo to me has a look of a serious disposition. Each photo has it’s own personality. Of course, I realize every one has a different perspective of each picture. You are very photogenic, and she is a good photographer. Keep up the good work!
Bryan,
I like the first, second and fifth picture the best! I agree, the photo in which you are wearing the black jacket with the collar up is a cool one!
I think that the photographer is amazing! I love the lighting, the angles and photoshop work that she`s done on your face. The second photo of you is my favorite, not only because you`re looking amazing in it, but also because the background is natural lighting and you can see that . I love the fact that it hasn`t been done any photoshop on that background. The last photo is my second favorite! I love the lighting and the soft high-fashion feeling that has been given. How can I contact this photographer? Do you happen to know her rates?
Thank You,
Adriana
Haha! I saw this blog searching the internet…. At first I saw Catalina Magee, than I saw Bryan Hutchinson! THE WORLD IS SO DARN SMALL! Catalina shot me a couple of years back for the Exotic Cars Magazine issued in march. She is amazing to work with! And Gorgeous… And you…Dude, you rock! I love the “One Boy`s Struggle” book! My BF gave it to me a few months ago and I am so sad that it ended…I couldn`t wait to go back into reading it before bed. By the way, I really didn`t think that you`d also have the looks?! Hmmm:)
i like the last picture just as is… it gives an ethereal quality to the face, the being, the eyes as window to the soul…. it brings out the beauty in you, more so than any of the other pictures…..
also like the one with raised eyebrow, it’s catchy, it’s interesting…
the other ones are really good photos but a bit too predictable…..
I think the pictures are great. Catalina is a truely talented aspiring photgrapher. I like the first pic. It says “what, I got ADHD! What are you gonna do about it?”
I am impressed with both of you.
I Love Cat’s work, she made you look amazing.
I have to agree with Scott, the first one show’s the right additude.
But you look great in the second one.
Nicole
WoW! What a great response. So far it seems the last picture is in the lead. This happens to be Catalina’s favorite too. Personally I like them all, the one some of you have identified as “Matrix” is my favorite! But that’s me personally. However, I am giving the last photo more consideration thanks to your feedback. The first photo is really just my way of saying “This is the only life I have got and I am living it the best I can! Let’s keep on, keeping on together!” Keep the suggestions coming. Cat and I are reading them and have gotten some ideas already!! Thanks!!
Bryan
Here’s the thoughts each photo invoked in me…..
1 – welcome to my crazy, zany world where I can be me w/o judgment
2 – I felt the mysterious magnetism in your eyes pull me closer
3 – the quirky, inqusitiveness look on your face made me want to laugh
4 – remember that scene in Liar Liar where Jim Carrey says to Jennifer Aniston ‘love me’, where he’s trying to affect her free will? I felt like you were trying to reach out with your fingers & tickle my mind lol
5 – warm, inviting, look into my eyes and tell me your secrets kind of picture
I liked them all, but I guess my favorite is probably #2
Another vote for #5. I feel like I’m looking through your eyes and into you, and I feel you’re doing the same to me. It’s the most immediately intimate shot, which will attract the people I think you want to reach.
I really like the first photo. Arms open wide to the world! Another one I really like is the “serious” picture. The one with the collar up. It reminds me of my son and how people label ADHD personalities based on a “look.” If you look at the picture and don’t know who or what your are about, it would give the impression your are very serious. People who have personality are serious, but also can be about what the other pictures portray. People would most likely say they don’t like the serious picture because it appears unapproachable….I just think it adds to another side to you.
Dang, how many comments?!:) I am really surprised and pleased with all these opinions. I LOVE your readers/ friends/ fans, B!
Thank you for this wonderful and entertaining blog post and sincere comments:)
Bryan, I love the one in the jacket with the collar up. No one looking at it would have any doubts that a boy with ADHD could grow up to be successful and have it all together. You look like you have the world at your fingertips.
Hey Bryan! Sorry to be so late weighing in on this… I love the first one – it’s a great shot of you. However, knowing you as I do (maybe a little bit better than alot of people here), I have to say that number 3, in my head, is such a true capture of your spirit – the quirkiness, the inquisitiveness… and I could even wonder if you were fooling around, making faces for the camera. They’re all great though – wonderful job, Cat!
