The Beauty of Writing – Lessons in Writing

The Beauty of Writing – Lessons in Writing

“Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another.” Author unknown One of the most frequent inquiries that I get is about writing. It’s a funny thing, writing, you don’t have to be very good at it to do it and I am not very good at it. Some say I am, some say I am not and some are in-between.  It’s nice to hear that someone has enjoyed something I have written, and it is painful to hear that my writing isn’t all that good. Either way, I benefit from my ADHD mind in that I don’t focus on criticism too long (not all criticism anyway). It’s not that I don’t care, because trust me, I do care, but one way or the other I just keep on writing. My thoughts and fingers love to dance. For me, what’s the most bizarre, is when someone asks me […]

Just another Call to Arms! Adult ADHD

Just another Call to Arms! Adult ADHD

Have you noticed that adult ADHD is making more news lately? As a matter of fact I just read that approximately 65% of children with ADHD will grow into adults with ADHD, or rather ADD.  I personally suspect that the percentage is much higher. It’s impossible to know how many adults are wondering around undiagnosed, but it’s estimated to be in the millions. I was diagnosed when I was 37 and in recent years I have met a remarkable number of adults diagnosed at a later age, some cases much later. This of course lends to the belief that ADHD isn’t real. How can so many people have it? I don’t know, but we do. Adult ADHD is about as much a myth as Childhood ADHD. There is no myth about ADHD except for those who blow it off because they do not understand it.  Most people who don’t know much about me […]

How Special Are You? A Real Perspective of Life with Adult ADHD

How Special Are You? A Real Perspective of Life with Adult ADHD

ADHD can test your willpower, but ADHD is not a test of your will. ADHD can test your attitude, but ADHD is not based on attitude. ADHD can test your feelings, cause us to feel ‘lesser than’, but ADHD is not based on feelings. ADHD can cause you to blame yourself, but ADHD is not based on who is at fault. ADHD can make you believe you are not trying hard enough, but ADHD is not based on how much you apply yourself. A lot of us with ADHD start out already at a very young age with big hopes and even bigger dreams. We tend to show so much potential early on, but as the years go by, more often than not, we lose our way. Along our journey, all too common our hopes and our dreams suffer, they get smaller and smaller until they all but vanish, distant and painful […]

Yes, I am flawed.

Yes, I am flawed.

In love and happiness, for better or worse, in sadness and sorrow. The days go by, countless they pass. I remember the days gone by, the walks late at night and your glistening hair in the moon light. I remember those days. I remember running across a bridge to capture your heart as you captured mine. For better or worse, I may be flawed, but I love you. I never thought there was a love so strong, so powerful. I never thought someone could capture me in rapture and delight, in pain and misery and in happiness and laughter. Life is all of those things, as is love. And love, my dear, is life. Without your love I was lost, with your love I have been found. I am so lucky. For so long I wasn’t. Yes, I am flawed. You know that and you love me anyway. You offer me your […]

What is achievement – what is success – what do these things mean to someone like you or me, with ADHD?

What is achievement – what is success – what do these things mean to someone like you or me, with ADHD?

Have you ever wondered about what success means to you? I mean, what it really means? Not just the definition, but rather what it feels like to be successful, to achieve something of significant relevance to you? I think for people with ADHD, like me and maybe you, the very word and the meaning of success is alien. We have read about it and heard about it and yet, rarely have we identified with it. Are you successful?  If that seems like a loaded question, it’s not, but I think to a lot of us, it seems that there may be some hidden implication within the question itself. If you say yes, then you are lying and displaying conceitedness! How dare you! Bow your head in proper shame. That’s not the voice from someone else; as a matter of fact it’s not a voice at all. It’s a perception that many […]

The Gift of ADHD and the Power of Positive Thinking

The Gift of ADHD and the Power of Positive Thinking

I love ADHD I really do! And if you stick with me through this post, you’re going to find out why. It’s amazing what powers I have found within myself and my ADHD traits. I wouldn’t give up my ADHD for anything in the world, not now, no way! When I first found out I had ADHD at the age of 37 and how it had been negatively impacting my life all along I was very upset about it, mostly because the diagnosis came so late and my life and circumstances could have been much improved with an early diagnosis, especially if I had been diagnosed in first or second grade, instead of just being held back and then put in a special education class. In truth, I loved my special education class, I talked about it in my first book “One Boy’s Struggle”, but let me tell you here that being […]

Physciatric Therapy and ADHD

Physciatric Therapy and ADHD

I have been in a lot of battles in my life, some were life threatening, some were tug of wars with myself for things I simply did not understand and some were just me trying to be confrontational with, well, me, myself and I. ADHD can suck so bad that nothing else matters, it leads to a life of constant struggle, going nowhere, unless backwards is a place you want to go. When an adult discovers he has ADHD (or she) I think it is natural to want to find treatment to improve the symptoms, to counter them as soon as possible. The quickest way to do that is with medication, the more profound and life enhancing way, I believe, is through professional physciatric therapy to actually go in and take stock of what we are thinking and why. The suddenly new possibilities of living an improved, aware life are […]

You can’t take it back – what is said is said – ADHD impulsivity

You can’t take it back – what is said is said – ADHD impulsivity

Impulsivity can lead to disaster due to blurting out thoughts never meant to be spoken. Thoughts race through our minds, here, there and back again. Some thoughts don’t mean much, they just race by and have no concrete meaning, but every now and then, in the heat of a moment or in uncontrolled haste, some thoughts never meant to be said slip out and, as much as we would like to and as much as we try to explain and apologize, we can’t take them back. We’ve all had that happen. However, let me try to explain something to any non-ADDer reading this. It’s called impulse control. Part of ADHD is a lack of impulse control and, as you can imagine (or not) we are quite impulsive. If something suddenly shines extra brightly in front of us and it is too expensive, outside of our budget, we may not consider […]

You are not alone

You are not alone

It’s easier alone. So it seems. Sometimes, the preference to be alone is so great that it is hard to break away from, it’s seductive and oh so quiet. When we are alone there is no one to judge us, no one to condemn us, moreover, there is no one to argue with. But, alas, being alone is so lonely. Not to know what to say, or how to say it if you did know. It’s so much better to remain in the shadow, hushed and alone. When alone, there’s no grade or compliance, there’s no role to play or correction to make. It’s easier to be alone, because, there’s no one to tell you that you are wrong, that you don’t have what it takes, that the way you live is wrong, that what you are doing is causing problems, that how you act is unacceptable. It’s better, just […]
