Susan Smalley talks about her husband and his life with ADHD

Good Saturday Everyone! I just read a wonderful article by Dr. Susan Smalley and I thought it would be nice to share it with all of you, my loyal and supportive readers here at Adder World.  She is not only a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, she is also a very supportive wife of an Adder who views and understands ADD ADHD to be a gift and not simply a disorder.

If Stephen Colbert can do it, well then SO CAN I!

If Stephen Colbert can do it, well then SO CAN I!

No, no calm down… cool your heals and don’t worry about it so much. Steven has been denied the right to run for president. Yep, that’s right—we all knew he would win. C’mon, that’s no secret. Why would he win? Because he is funny, but what is more curious is that he says things the way they are! And, that my friends, is very funny! And it’s uniquely refreshing. Like Cool Aid, or Doritos—you pick. The question we should be asking is why did Colbert decide to run for president? To make a mockery of it? To challenge the front runners? To be a contender? Nah, I think he did it to sell his book and in order to sell his book to Adders (as I know this was his intention-yep) he had to be extraordinary and entertaining and well, run for president! It worked! His book is number 1 […]

The Contradiction of ADD ADHD part 2

The Contradiction of ADD ADHD part 2

The most confounding contradiction to ADD ADHD for parents, teachers, society and even the person with ADD ADHD can be summed up in one single solitary word “Interest”. When an Adder has interest in something they can show not only a spark of genius, but they can also be a true genius and, or innovator in wherever the interest is. That’s confounding because when an Adder shows this capability many interpret it to mean that the person can do anything and just chooses not to. Adders, especially the younger ones, have very little, if any control over what interests their minds. That’s a simple fact which is seemingly unacceptable to the majority of our population. The thinking is: if you can do it in one thing, then you should be able to do it in all things. I think there is a lot of truth here, think about it by

Shorter lives those with ADD ADHD and TIME

Shorter lives those with ADD ADHD and TIME

I was just thinking this morning about how quickly time passes and how the things I experienced a decade ago seem just like yesterday. And that got me thinking about how I perceive time and maybe other Adders have the same perception of time. This is a very, very deep thought and is a bit disturbing, so hold onto whatever you can if you’re going to read this article…

NOTES FROM THE UNIVERSE

Since I enjoy spreading inspiration and motivation, –because, as an Adder, I used to find it hard to come by, I thought I would share something with my readers, which has been inspiring me for months now. Positive ADDer Quote of the week

Positive ADDer Quote of the week

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Steve Jobs Is Steve Jobs an Adder? I don’t know, but his words often sound as if he has lived the life of an Adder—and doing a damn fine job of it! Steve Jobs dropped out of college and then hung around to learn from specific classes he was interested in and today he is one of the most successful people in the world. He did not abide by the “dogma”, he did not allow the rules of the educational system to hinder […]

Comments, Suggestions and Ideas

The reason I created Adder World was and is to help spread understanding and awareness of ADD ADHD. I speak from experiences I have had, what I have researched and the experiences others have shared with me. I do not claim to be a doctor or any other type of medical professional. If my experiences and what I have observed and therefore write about help bring awareness and inquiry to others, then I am achieving my said goal and hopefully more. You can help me! Read on if you really, really want to help…

The Contradiction of ADD ADHD part 1

The Contradiction of ADD ADHD part 1

People with ADD and ADHD seem to contradict themselves. At least that’s a perception I believe the general public has and a major reason why many think the disorder is bogus. Here is the contradiction: “Well, when little Jane and Jack are interested, or put their minds to something, they can accomplish anything!” What’s worrisome to me is that despite ADD ADHD being the most researched mental disorder in the modern age, the general public still questions the validity. There is no question. ADD ADHD is real. Many even blame the disorder on pharmaceutical companies. Why is that worrisome to me?

ADD ADHD Diagnosis WARNING!

ADD ADHD Diagnosis WARNING!

I have been reading something rather disturbing in the news lately. Some doctors are giving prescriptions for ADD ADHD without a thorough examination for diagnosis. Basically, people come in and complain they can’t concentrate or stay focused and receive a prescription for ADD ADHD medication. “Oh Dread!” no wonder we have complaints of over diagnosis! I don’t know if the news is true or how many people have reported this, but if it is true
