Many of you have written me asking which books I have found to be the most helpful in dealing with my ADD ADHD. And some of you have been extremely surprised when I respond and give up my list. The usual response is the question “Why not more ADD ADHD specific books?” –The answer is simple: I haven’t read too many ADD ADHD books which I have found to be useful, not yet anyway and to be quite honest, I haven’t really read that many or I have started and never picked them up again and it’s usually because I simply can’t get through them. I have only read 1 ADD ADHD book from cover to cover and it is listed here. I learn best from stories, life stories and experiences and I suspect this is the same for most of us Adders and that’s the reason I wrote my forthcoming book “One Boy’s Struggle: A Memoir”
Here’s my list:
- The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
- Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
- The Art of the Comeback by Donald Trump
- The Secret by Rhonda Byrne
- Driven to Distraction by Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey
- How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere by Larry King
- How High Can You Bounce? by Roger Crawford
- Winning by Jack Welch
- Rags to Rifleman, Then What? By W. W. Woody
- Small is the new big by Seth Godin
I know this isn’t the typical Adder book list, but you’re probably tired of reading the same old lists over and over anyway—I know I am! I read books that capture me, hypnotize my mind and even teach me a thing or two. The above list is in no specific order, but if you would like to get started and you are not sure which to start with—may I suggest starting with these two:
- The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
- How High Can You Bounce? by Roger Crawford
As you have probably read in my previous articles The Power of Positive Thinking was given to me by a good friend and mentor. Thanks John! How High Can You Bounce captured me with the title and didn’t let go until the very last page—I found it in a bookstore in Las Vegas of all places! By the way, while in Las Vegas my wife and I became BIG winners—Vegas is where we got married!!! We don’t like to gamble, so we didn’t and we always go with the sure thing! That’s an Adder lesson in of its self.
What books have helped you the most with dealing with your ADD ADHD?
