The Discovered Treasure We discovered a treasure for our senses, something we will remember for years to come and I would love to share it with you. A couple weekends ago Joan (my wife) and I went out for a nice ride to the Bad Dürkheim wine fest. It’s the largest wine fest in the world. It’s more than a wine fest, though. It’s a carnival with lots of rides and, of course, the most important part, lots of delicious food! Isn’t food the main reason anyone goes to a carnival? Or is that just me? We love carnivals. But let’s not talk about the rides. I’ve already gone there in a previous post and the wimp inside of me doesn’t want to go there again anytime soon. We left early one Saturday morning with the plan of finding a decent parking place. Smart move, right? However, things did not go as planned. Something special happened as […]

Organized Chaos Have you ever heard anyone use the phrase, “organized chaos”? Well that is how I used to refer to the clutter on my home office desk. But, really, if I am honest, it was disorganized chaos and it drove me crazy! I’ll explain, but first… A great ride! On saturday I went for a  relaxing drive, it felt fantastic. My car seemed to drive better, smoother and dare I say it even smelled better! I really enjoyed being out on the road, sailing the streets and listening to rock and roll music. My mind filled with ideas I might write about. Ideas I could grab, hold on to and use. My creativity was flowing right along with the speed of my car down the highway. It’s the same car I have had for the last 5 years, but something was different. For some unknown reason I woke up one day last […]

Turning ADHD Disadvantages into Advantages

Turning ADHD Disadvantages into Advantages

If you’re tired of hearing about all the bad, negative things about ADHD then this post is for you! This post isn’t to downplay the serious consequences of living with ADHD, it’s to take another perspective and reframe it in a positive way which has worked for me. Of course, many of these on my list have serious consequences which I have had to work through. ADHD isn’t curable, but sometimes we let it kick us when we are down and like the boxing coach says, ‘stay down’. I’ve never been one to ‘stay down’, I’m stubburn like that! 1) Distraction. As I wrote in a recent blog post, I have learned to appreciate my distracted nature. It has taken me places I would never have gone, or much less dreamed of. It really has led me on some awesome adventures down alleyways, backwoods and vivid, spectacular places in my own imagination […]

ADHD and the Gift of Being Distracted

ADHD and the Gift of Being Distracted

I have ADHD. I strive to reframe and rephrase my disadvantages and turn them into advantages. It’s something I try to do as much as possible. ADHD is a serious disorder that affects millions of people. The symptoms cause very serious challenges. Each person develops their own, personal coping skills in order to deal with their symptoms. Many of us, as I was, can easily become overwhelmed and will need very specific, specialized treatment, perhaps even medication. My point of view is part of my coping skills. It’s been working for me and I will tell you why. Over the years I have learned that I tend to get bored with certain tasks quickly and as a consequence I become easily distracted. To compensate, what I have learned to do is multi-task. That’s part of my answer to distraction. I spend short bursts of time on projects and quickly turn […]

White Noise for Overcoming Distraction

White Noise for Overcoming Distraction

I was reading this month’s issue of ADDitude Magazine when I came upon an excellent article by Douglas Cootey titled Quiet Riot. In the article he discusses white noise and provides a superb link to a site where we can listen to white noise (or Pink or Brown/Red) noise. I have visited the link and have enjoyed the sounds while writing. It’s very helpful and free, excellent for distracted minds such as ours. ~Bryan
