I hate change, I absolutely dread it! Few things upset me more than having to make a change. No, I am not talking about simple changes. I am talking about moving and having to meet and get along with new people. There’s just too much involved. I hate changes that rearrange the way I live my life and changes that take things from me, like family members who pass away. I hate those types of changes. I am not good at changes. It takes me months, sometimes years to get along with new people. I am getting better at it, but I still would rather not do it. It takes a while for people to understand me, I can be extremely confusing.

  Bryan & ADD VS Francisco Bustamante Before I was diagnosed with ADD I got extremly frustrated that I could not keep my concentration. I tried things you wouldn’t believe, even to the point that I wore shoes which were too small believing that being uncomfortable would help me keep my focus. Believe it or not, a lot of my tactics worked, but usually just as long as I paid attention to the tactic and that usually wasn’t very long. Lucky charms were a personal favorite. I would find something, a rock, a ring, a necklace, just about anything and believe holding on to whatever it was would help me stay in the here and now. Talk about being desperate!

Sometimes we get so caught up in our symptoms, the complications and the stigma of ADD and ADHD that we forget that we still have the power of choice. No, we cannot choose to rid ourselves of ADD or ADHD and we cannot simply make the choice to be cured. That’s not what I am talking about and I do not imply that. However, with that said, we have some choices we can make and making choices can be the defining factor in a lot of the situations we go through, how we treat others and how we react to others. ADD ADHD is not an excuse, it is a reason and it does not inhibit us from becoming better people or from contributing to relationships or to society in general.

To be bullied or not to be bullied – is that the question? Many Adder children suffer from being bullied and as it turns out a high percentage of bullies have ADHD. This might seem confusing, but if I take a moment to think about it, no, I guess it is not that confusing. Adders have trouble in school with both the standard educational side and the social side. I bet the inattentive adders are probably more likely to be bullied and the hyperactive types are more likely to be bullies. However, it could probably go either way, but inattentive’s usually try to stay out of the way and in the background when possible.

  One particular thing that I believe helped me significantly was how my mother would have us kids gather around her for a story. I loved it when my mother read aloud for us. Mom always picked wonderful stories, full of adventure and fantasy. I listened intently, probably the best attention I gave to any books as a youngster.
