Keep on Keeping on with ADHD

Keep on Keeping on with ADHD

Sometimes that’s all we can do. Sometimes we do something tragic, something which is so disappointing that it hurts so much, the pain is excruciating, it resonates through our entire being and we just can’t help but ask ourselves… why? Why does it have to be that way… why does it have to be so hard… did I do something to curse my life, my existence… does my God hate me?   Ever feel that way? Ever curse the ground you walk on and just want to give up, lay down and say ‘no more!’? It’s so easy. It’s so natural. It’s so much a part of the condition we call ADHD that it isn’t something we want to describe or contemplate, it just is and too often we can’t seem to do anything about it.   I wish I didn’t, I wish I was… I wish… I wish… I wish… […]

Fundamentals – learning the basics for the first time!

Fundamentals – learning the basics for the first time!

I am about to tell you something about ADHD that will blow your mind! You will think about it and just go … Dang, that’s true! Then again, you might go… that’s ridiculous, Bryan’s lost his mind! One thing I have always been known for is that I am a very fast learner. No, I am not necessarily a fast runner, unless I am being chased, then I can get my run on pretty good. In the past being fast made me feel like I was better than everyone else, because, they were slow and then eventually and unfortunately, they would pass me for reasons I couldn’t understand. I hadn’t gotten any worse, I was still pretty darn good at what I was doing, so, why were these people passing me?! It was confounding I tell you! To make matters worse, these folks passing me could not do what I […]

Peer Pressure and ADHD

Peer Pressure and ADHD

ADDers fall for peer pressure. That’s a bold statement and it is, more often than not, true. The reasons are simple really, nothing complex about an ADDer submitting to peer pressure. In fact, I have met many adults diagnosed late with ADHD that did not understand why they kept giving in until they were actually diagnosed and receiving treatment. Many of us with ADHD and still undiagnosed (I was diagnosed at the age of 37) know something is different about the way we are, we do not exactly conform and we feel inferior in many ways (you are NOT inferior for having ADHD, no, never think that, ever). Even those who are diagnosed and receiving treatment find themselves falling for peer pressure. It’s about fitting in and doing anything to not be the odd one out. It’s not a good thing. Falling for peer pressure opens one up to be used […]

How to quit smoking if you have ADHD?

How to quit smoking if you have ADHD?

I have only wanted to quit since shortly after I started, but I don’t seem to have the will power to do it. There, I said it! Well, it seems that I have it tougher than those who do not have ADHD! Yep, that’s what a new research study has shown. You can read about it HERE. I agree with the study in that I do feel calmer and more focused while smoking a cigarette. I won’t mention which brand, but some call it the cowboy killer, but I am not a cowboy so I am probably out of the woods on that title — not! Anyway, I focus better and think clearer while smoking. However, I am not sure if it is the fact that smoking cigarettes releases dopamine or the fact that my body is craving nicotine. Maybe it’s both. Truth about that is that I wouldn’t […]

ADHD Diagnosis and Validation

ADHD Diagnosis and Validation

Validation can be exceptionally powerful. Validation is often underestimated and left out of discussions when it comes to the recovery/improving process. I have found it to be extremely important. This is what I believe: Validation is a powerful healing agent for those who have suffered too long with ADHD unaware of why they are the way they are. Validation does not mean that things were in actuality okay. Validation means that yes, something was different and not completely under the person’s control. ADDer’s, especially those of us who have lived a very long while not understanding the ‘why’ behind our actions and reactions, feel a powerful sense of validation when diagnosed with ADHD. And as we learn more about ADHD the validation grows stronger still. Validation brings with it a new sense of self, increasing one’s confidence and self-worth. A proper diagnosis, coupled with understanding, helps many through the grieving […]

I have ADHD, but I want to be Normal

I have ADHD, but I want to be Normal

I often read posts across the internet from people with ADHD wishing they could be normal. I think I know what most mean by requesting to be normal. Unfortunately, or, fortunately, there is no magic potion to make anyone normal. What is normal anyway? Who defines what normal is? All of us are beset with challenges, struggles and special wishes for a better tomorrow. My question, for anyone wishing to be normal, is this: What is exciting, unique, special or individual about being normal? Okay, I have a second question: What is normal? Does normal really exist? Okay, that was 3 questions, or, maybe it was 4. I am simply, thankfully, not normal. ~Bryan

You are what you say you are

You are what you say you are

What you say and how you describe yourself is ‘who you are’. Our words are very powerful and what we say has more powerful control over us than we sometimes realize. There are always two ways to describe a situation – it is our choice. I made a mistake. Or, I learned something valuable. Why can’t I be normal? Or, I am unique and special. I am not likable. Or, I am likable. One may argue that our experiences create the way we think of ourselves and if we want to we can validate the negative statements all day long, BUT the important part of this exercise is that you can validate the positive statements just as well. It’s a choice we all make. Practice makes perfect. Our minds will develop the outcomes for us depending on what we expect. It’s not important to control outside forces, but you can control your inner forces, […]

The Search – The Dream – The Alchemist

The Search – The Dream – The Alchemist

In the last few years I haven’t been that interested in reading fiction. I guess I had lost my interest in fairy tales and things which simply are not real or actual. But for some reason I recently picked up a book called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I was compelled to read this book out of nowhere, can’t really explain it, but the story within The Alchemist explained the reason to me. The Alchemist is a story about living your dreams, searching out your destiny and believing in what you can’t always see.  It’s faith really, faith in yourself and that your purpose for living has meaning. “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve your dream” is, in my opinion, the central message within The Alchemist. If one believes in the Law of Attraction and therefore, the things you want and have faith in will […]
