Do I have ADD or ADHD or either? Perception is a Deception

Do I have ADD or ADHD or either? Perception is a Deception

That’s a question I get quite a bit: Do I really have ADHD? When I say yes, the next comment is somewhat of a question/statement: “Then it must not be that severe.” Or, the next question will be “What medication are you on? It seems to be working great!” Of course, when I say I do not take any medication, I often get a stunned look of profound amazement. Perception is not a correct answer. Perception is just what we think from what we see and hear on the surface of things. Making decisions from perception is most often a mistake. A lot of new ideas fail because they are based on false perceptions, businesses fail for the same reason and so do human relationships. The biggest problem we must overcome is perception. Perception is deception. Intuition based on perception can be problematic too. Kids with ADHD can use perception […]

The Sad Truth of ADHD – No, it is NOT an easy life

The Sad Truth of ADHD – No, it is NOT an easy life

For every Michael Phelps, Terry Bradshaw, Paris Hilton and Richard Branson there are hundreds, perhaps even thousands of others with ADHD who go by each day unnoticed and alone in their struggles. These are wonderful people suffering chastisements, belittlements and ridicule from themselves, and others, who may never know what it is like to smile a genuine smile of pure happiness. Lonely spirits searching for hope and happiness, searching for some relief from the constant bombardment of life in a void, uncontrolled and unrelenting. I have not forgotten the days gone by, the pain or the tears and the fears. No, they are still fresh in my mind, in every step I take forward. They beckon to me and I remember them for what they were. The goal of my writing, in my memoir, here and elsewhere, is to show that life does go on, and that there is a way, that […]

My personal book about ADHD, the ADDer World websites and me 1 year later

My personal book about ADHD, the ADDer World websites and me 1 year later

Sometimes it is nice to take a moment and reflect on things. ADDer World is now a year old (ADDer World community only 2 months) and my book “One Boy’s Struggle: A Memoir – Surviving Life with Undiagnosed ADD” has been on the open market for just over 6 months. I sit here, close my eyes and reflect. Where was I in my quest just over a year ago, what hopes did I have and what did I imagine the future would hold? Seems to me I was living on a prayer (to quote the inspirational band Bon Jovi). I have a very vivid imagination, it is incredible, the things I can see and the things I can sense. But who knew? I didn’t. Fears, anxiety, hope and desire – terrible nightmares and wonderful, splendid wishful dreams. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. And yet, with a little hope and trust in the […]

Thinking First is Better before Reacting

Thinking First is Better before Reacting

Those of us with ADHD have the tendency to get upset fast and react faster. If there is one thing I have learned over the years, and trust me, I am still learning it – it is that we have to take a moment to breathe and think a bit deeper into situations. Not too deeply, but deep enough to realize that reacting, just because we are impulsive, is usually not the right thing to do and doing so will probably not help us achieve things in a positive manner. Don’t get me wrong, being impulsive can be a benefit, in the right situations, as with firefighters or police who must be quick witted and impulsive in serious situations for their very survival and the survival of others.  Just because we are impulsive does not mean we are wrong or that our decision making is error prone. Actually, the truth […]

Choosing the right laptop notebook for me ASUS F8VA-B1 and exploring impulsive nature of ADHD

Choosing the right laptop notebook for me ASUS F8VA-B1 and exploring impulsive nature of ADHD

Not long ago I was openly thinking of which laptop I wanted to purchase. Thankfully, after much research and consideration I decided on the right laptop for me. I have decided on the ASUS F8VA-B1, a complete departure from my original ‘feelings’. I had seen ASUS on store shelves, and yet never gave them a close look. Recently that changed and the reason for that change is actually rather simple: what I wanted on impulse and pure feelings was not available and therefore, while I impatiently waited for it, I started to fill time visiting local and online stores and began fiddling around with the other laptops that were offered.  Sometimes it is a very good thing that what I start out wanting on impulse and pure feelings isn’t always directly obtainable. I cannot count the number of times I have been ‘fortunate’ this way. I write all the time about how impulsive and […]

Michael Phelps ADHD Hyper Focus Concentration Helps Win Gold Medal in Beijing!

Michael Phelps ADHD Hyper Focus Concentration Helps Win Gold Medal in Beijing!

“Single-Minded Focus” Michael Phelps won the Gold Medal in his first swim in Beijing! There seems to be some confusion and wonder at how and why Michael Phelps was able to overcome so many odds to not break under so much mental pressure. Michael is described in countless articles to have laser like focus on his swimming and single mindedness on being the best. His concentration has even been described as other-worldly. Yes, Michael has the body makeup of a perfect swimming machine, but in competition it is always the mental aspect which allows someone to step above the rest – in Michael’s case, way above the rest – domination. Michael Phelps has ADHD. I am not the least bit confused by what others are describing about his laser like concentration, this mental part of his makeup, believe it or not, is rather normal for most people with ADHD. It […]

Email from A Woman of Great Stature and Fame

Email from A Woman of Great Stature and Fame

By now I would think that I would be used to the diversity of the people that contact me. The truth is, there are times I open my email and just stare at the name on the email in my inbox. Usually, I just think it must be someone spamming me and that can’t really be who it is. Slowly, and ever so gently, I click on the email title and wait as the internet responds, anticipating some kind of advertisement… Today’s email turned out to be exactly who the address said it was. I read the email slowly and I felt overwhelmed by the nature of the message and who had written it. It was a wonderful message of support and heartfelt thanks for telling my story. She also quoted a couple passages I had written in my book which were close to her heart. Sometimes we tend to forget, or not take in, […]

Now Hiring! People with ADHD!

Now Hiring! People with ADHD!

Don’t say this and don’t say that. Edit, edit, edit. That phrase is good, but this word could be wrong or that word could cause problems if perceived wrong. Keep your back straight. Posture is important. What we say and what we do is very important, there is very little room for error. Civilization in the modern world is about being as close to perfect as possible. It doesn’t matter really what situation we are in, the importance of being error free is incredible. We have become so used to editing our own words over and over again that we hardly realize that we know what we want to say, but if we say it exactly the way we mean it, well, then we are going to have problems. Just about all of us with ADHD have gotten used to being called immature, childish, green and juvenile – basically we […]

Your ADHD Questions are Answered

Your ADHD Questions are Answered

Before I was first diagnosed with ADHD I had written thousands of want to be novels and other stuff, but not any of them were complete. Since diagnosis I wrote my book “One Boy’s Struggle: A Memoir”, started my blog ADDer World and I have recently created an online community for those with ADHD or are related in some way to someone with ADHD.  Being diagnosed with ADHD was liberation from a mind obsessed with blame, lots of self-blame for a great many things, a major one is for not finishing things which were important to me. I receive an abundant amount of emails and a great majority of them are from people wanting to know how I over came my life long struggles and what it meant to me to be diagnosed. There is no short answer for these questions. I knew my story would resonate with many people, well, […]
